Carromancy

Carromancy

It’s a way of telling the future by melting wax then pouring it into cold water.
The way the wax moves as it cools and the shapes it makes are read by some-one and they tell you what is going to happen.
I don’t know if they predict the immediate future or how far ahead.
I don’t know if or how much they charge.
I don’t kow what you would call them.
Fortune teller? More like fortune hunter.
You can read more about it at Wikipedia.
Correction: A diviner is the term used and he heats wax in a brass bowl.
When it liquifies he pours it into cold water.
They are then read by a carromancist.
Sounds like a double act.
I wonder if the boys of Mumbai use this method.
I doubt it. Probably couldn’t find one.
I looked up carromancist on Google and there was 1 entry, yes 1, but 635,000 for diviners and nearly 1.5 million for fortune teller.
People don’t even read tea-leaves any more as tea bags are more convenient and quicker. No matter if it tastes like ….!

How many players are left-handed?

I have tried to find out if left handed people can play Carrom as well as right handers.
From talking to people at various events I have to say yes they can.
So how many are champions?
Proven answers, please, not some story of your uncle who had a friend, who’s next door neighbour’s son’s teacher was a champion some time in the 1960s.

If you have evidence, either a photo or a newspaper clipping send it into us.

It will help fill in the gaps in the history of the game. Thanks.

If you have the time take a quick look at the following articles 1 and 2.

Curry flavour

Turmeric is a yellow coloured spice used a lot in Indian cooking. In laboratory tests a compound of the spice killed cancer cells. This report was written by researchers in Sept. 20 2004, International Journal of Cancer.

I wonder if they’ve found a way to remove turmeric stains from white blouses?

What has this to do with Carrom?

Well, most of the Carrom Champs are Indian.

OK they have one advantage. They grow up playing the game, you say.

But they also have another advantage and I am going to share the secret with you.

How to Hit a Slam & How to Hit Black Slam

I have been asked to write a topic on how to hit a Slam and how to hit a Black Slam.
You have to be like this guy. Extremely focused, concentrate hard and… CONCENTRATE
HELP.

I am not an expert Carrom player. I played much more when I was younger. I write and help maintain this site to promote Carrom.

Dane terrior wrote “On the break, if break is good then you can hit the slam, if break is bad, then black slam.

Thanks Dane terrior, but I am none the wiser. Please excuse my ignorance. Can you explain a bit more. Thanks.

Any advice or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

How to save money in Mumbai

Don’t play or gamble against its Carrom players.

Dollars
In Mumbai & nearby cities in Maharashtra carrom is used for gambling. This is one reason why Maharashtran players are brilliant at the game.

In India every state has Carrom clubs, some with coaching and other facilities.

The coaches are very conscientious and train their champions hard. They maintain the carrom boards and ensure they are in good condition. They also ensure the comfort of the players and that venues are suitable for playing, e.g.. sufficient light.

There is great competition all over India and new faces are coming up all the time.

The champions like Natraj and Babu better watch out.

These are well known players in India, but have yet to be recognized in the rest of the world.

Thanks to Harpreet for his advice. I’m such an innocent. I never imagined people would gamble on Carrom.

Carrom

The basics of carrom
Well, now that I am 15 posts in I figure it’s a good time to post a bit of info explaining what carrom is (might have been wise to start with this one huh?)

3D carrom board

So here we go (for those that don’t know)
Carrom is a wooden board game played by 2- 4 players popular in Asia and the Far East. This traditional game is similar to pool, snooker and billiards in many ways (except the pieces are flat and there are no cues) and is gaining in popularity across Europe and the US.

Carrom is played on a sqaure wooden board (see picture below) with 4 pockets in the corners for “potting” your piece.

As I mentioned, Carrom Rules are very similar to pool (many say that carrom is the predecessor to many ‘bar games” such as pool, billiards and snooker) and played with 9 pieces on each side.

How to break the rules and get away with it

Have a look at this video.
Divya is definitely Champion material.
Maybe not Carrom, but she’d make a great politician.
Then again she’s too pretty and admits to cheating. So maybe not.
The video is here

They’ll get piles

I wrote earlier that sitting straight was important, then a few days later I read that it could be bad for you.
Here is a photo of 2 keen Carrom players using a home made board with bottle tops for Carrom pieces in Java, Indonesia. Two boys playing carrom
They don’t seem to have any posture problems. If I could sit like that I’d be happy. But I’m too stiff now and my joints creak.
Have a look at this site. Go to games index, then Carrom.
A very interesting site, not just for Carrom but all sorts of games.
They have the history of Carrom, Billiards, Snooker, Bar Billiards, Bagatelle, Pool, Shove Ha’penny, Crokinole, Skittles, Indoor Quoits and Bagatelle. These are games that have been around for years, no centuries, and people still enjoy them.
Another plus point. You don’t need batteries for any of these games.

How to start your own Carrom club

Well, you could just play in a field… but we figured we’d give you a few better suggestions than that:

Carrom players in a field

Here are a few tips to get a Carrom club started near you.
1 Ask in your local pub if you can hold a match there on a night that is usually quiet. Make sure to bring a few friends, not rent-a-crowd, and encourage any regulars to join in. It makes a change from Karaoke and quizzes. It’s a good idea to take a board along beforehand, and show the landlord/lady and remind them also that Carrom players and spectators do get thirsty.
2 You could also try community centres and colleges.
3 What about a lunchtime club at work?

Limericks

There was a carrom player from Mombai
around the board, his pieces would fly
he was the best
he beat all the rest
who is he? well it is I.
