Rules of carrom

I have been asked about carrom rules.

As I have said before I am not an expert.

I am an enthusiastic amateur. That means I help maintain the site for the love of the game.

From the latin verb amor = to love.

The most important rule, in my opinion, is that everyone enjoys the game.

However for all you future champions I would highly recommend you to have a look at the ALL INDIA CARROM FEDERATION carrom rules.

They have pages and pages of rules and advice.

Have a look and if you still need help I’ll pass your details to an expert.

I am not an expert. As I said earler I help maintain the site for love of the game.

Hope this helps.

Ode to carrom board

A Carrom board is a thing of beauty
Take care of it, that is your duty
And if you want to be the best
Play on, play on there is no rest
For the wicked, and the good
If you play daily, soon you could
Become a winner, a carom champ,
Then you’ll enter the Carromcamp
Your name will be in the history books
And from the rich and famous, admiring looks
To get carrom into the Olympic Games
One of our important aims.
You could be there, have no doubt
But we need a sponsor with some clout
But if enough start to play
It will happen one fine day.

Mohammed Rafi

2.jpg
Mohammed Rafi was not your usual celebrity.

He avoided film parties, didn’t drink or smoke, went to bed at 9 pm and rose at 4 am to pray for 3 hours every morning.

Rafi’s only indulges were sports like carrom, badminton and flying kites with family and friends.

I love this video clip which was used in the film Ghost World.

Only the good die young and he was only 56 when he died in 1980.

He is still missed.

Banging about in Bangalore

Every Sunday in the Russel market area of Bangalore in a dismal, drab room future champions of the game are taking it very seriously.

The world champion for the past two years, Mr. D.M. Shankara plays here.

He used to play on the streets and made bamboo baskets for a living.

Mr. Wilson started the club to encourage new players and also to keep his hand in.

He used to play at State level.

In these clubs they charge about Rs 10 per hour to play.

However it’s over 25 years since I visited Bangalore, the garden city, and friends have told me it is busy, busy, busy.

You can read the complete newspaper article about Bangalore’s carrom club.

Silicon Valley of india.

Bangalore is built on a plateau of a mountain, so forget the valley, you know what I mean.

It’s time some computer company sponsored these clubs and new players.

The money involved would be chicken feed to some of them.

If any of you do I’ll write nice things about you here.

A carrom set-up

I’ve been asked to explain how to set up the game of Carrom.
You need a red counter, the queen and she goes in the middle of the carrom board. 9 black and 9 white, well brown actually as they are wooden, arranged alternatively around the queen. then in the next circle, place a matching colour against counters. Then the 3rd and final circle fill in with remaining counters, alternately.
Below is a picture of how to set up a carrom board. Although I haven’t used a thousand words you’ll get a better idea if you look at the picture.

Here is a link to a video where a player is setting up and does so in less than 2 minutes.
I hope this helps.
