Meyhar Bhasin, Carrom Queen

meyhar-thumb.jpg I read recently that Meyhar Bhasin hosted a game of carom.

Where? When? Who were the players?

If anyone has any photos, or better still a video, please send us a copy and we will post it here.

She would make a great ambassador for Carrom.

She’s beautiful, famous, intelligent and she could help raise the profile of the game.

Of course, she is also extremely busy with her Meyhar Bhasin academy.
Newspaper article here tells of her latest venture.

Salman Khan’s Carromavan

Salman Khan

Salman Khan likes beautiful things and to prove it he has designed a van for himself.

“Salmanbhai’s van will be like his second house. This is why he wanted to design this van himself. The van will cost Rs 80 lakh. He wanted enough space in the van to park his Suzuki Hayabusa bike too, In all likelihood, the van will be ready by May 5.”

says our source.
It will cost around Rs 80 lakh Rupees. That’s nearly £100,000.

The best thing about it will be a corner where he can play carrom and other games.

Wonder if he’d sponsor some competitions?

He could call it “The Salman Khan Carrom Contest”.

We need some photos of him playing the game.

Think how that would lift Carrom’s profile if he appeared in some photos of a glossy mag., playing Carrom to relax after a hard day’s filming?

There will be two rooms in the Carromavan, a private one and a second room for meetings.

He also gets a top of the range music system, a plasma TV, a huge collection of DVDs, refrigerator, coffee machine, toilet and a shower.

The interior will be decorated using paintings done by Bhai’s himself.

More details about the Carromavan and more Salman Khan facts.

Indian games

Tonight while looking for items about carom I typed Indian games into Google.
Over 18 million sites came up.
However No. 1 is India games, computer games and suchlike.
No. 4 was street games of India,
There were several other Indian sites on the first page.
However not one had anything carromy.
I was quite surprised.
I’ll let you know if I find anything further on.

Carromata

Carromata

According to Webster Dictionary a carromata is a light, two-wheeled, boxlike vehicle usually drawn by a single native pony and used to convey passengers within city limits or for traveling. It is common public carriage in the Philippines.
I have searched for photos to show an example but all I found was the following.
this-one.jpg
It’s a bit old, but it’s such a nice picture.
Have a look at the whole postcard collection.
They are quite beautiful.
I know this is nothing to do with Carrom, the game, but my excuses are they play Carrom in the Philippines and I think it is interesting.
I wonder which word came first? What do you think?

King Queen Knight or Bishop?

What do you call the red counter in a Carrom game?

That was the question asked recently on an Indian quiz show.
The guy didn’t know!!
Shah Rukh Khan is the host, and when the contestant said “king’ Khan said, “It can’t be King, because I am the only King!”
You can read the article here.
The correct answer is of course queen.

Arcade Carrom

Have a go at the game linked here. Clever, eh?
I scored 15 with 141 and lost my striker twice.
I don’t know how long it took but it could be quite addictive.
You have been warned.

The guy who designed it is a medical student, who also writes music parodies. Where does he fid the time?
I don’t know how tall he is but he is dark and handsome.

Carromancy

Carromancy

It’s a way of telling the future by melting wax then pouring it into cold water.
The way the wax moves as it cools and the shapes it makes are read by some-one and they tell you what is going to happen.
I don’t know if they predict the immediate future or how far ahead.
I don’t know if or how much they charge.
I don’t kow what you would call them.
Fortune teller? More like fortune hunter.
You can read more about it at Wikipedia.
Correction: A diviner is the term used and he heats wax in a brass bowl.
When it liquifies he pours it into cold water.
They are then read by a carromancist.
Sounds like a double act.
I wonder if the boys of Mumbai use this method.
I doubt it. Probably couldn’t find one.
I looked up carromancist on Google and there was 1 entry, yes 1, but 635,000 for diviners and nearly 1.5 million for fortune teller.
People don’t even read tea-leaves any more as tea bags are more convenient and quicker. No matter if it tastes like ….!

How many players are left-handed?

I have tried to find out if left handed people can play Carrom as well as right handers.
From talking to people at various events I have to say yes they can.
So how many are champions?
Proven answers, please, not some story of your uncle who had a friend, who’s next door neighbour’s son’s teacher was a champion some time in the 1960s.

If you have evidence, either a photo or a newspaper clipping send it into us.

It will help fill in the gaps in the history of the game. Thanks.

If you have the time take a quick look at the following articles 1 and 2.

Curry flavour

Turmeric is a yellow coloured spice used a lot in Indian cooking. In laboratory tests a compound of the spice killed cancer cells. This report was written by researchers in Sept. 20 2004, International Journal of Cancer.

I wonder if they’ve found a way to remove turmeric stains from white blouses?

What has this to do with Carrom?

Well, most of the Carrom Champs are Indian.

OK they have one advantage. They grow up playing the game, you say.

But they also have another advantage and I am going to share the secret with you.

How to save money in Mumbai

Don’t play or gamble against its Carrom players.

Dollars
In Mumbai & nearby cities in Maharashtra carrom is used for gambling. This is one reason why Maharashtran players are brilliant at the game.

In India every state has Carrom clubs, some with coaching and other facilities.

The coaches are very conscientious and train their champions hard. They maintain the carrom boards and ensure they are in good condition. They also ensure the comfort of the players and that venues are suitable for playing, e.g.. sufficient light.

There is great competition all over India and new faces are coming up all the time.

The champions like Natraj and Babu better watch out.

These are well known players in India, but have yet to be recognized in the rest of the world.

Thanks to Harpreet for his advice. I’m such an innocent. I never imagined people would gamble on Carrom.
